Doubter 2: Well, that and learn to wait tables!
(Doubters 1 and 2 really laugh at their own joke).
Doubter 3: Look, you bunch of dreamers, being on Broadway is one of the hardest gigs to get.
Doubter 4: People train for years and still don’t make it. Besides, you’re just a bunch of kids and, let’s face it, it’s never gonna happen.
All Doubters: Never!
Dreamer 1: We’ll see about that!

WHEN I GROW UP
SCENE 2
Doubter 1: Nice song. But are you crazy? Why would anyone want to grow up?
Doubter 2: Yeah, look how good we kids have it!
Doubter 3: Someone feeds us.
Doubter 4: Someone get us clothes and takes us places we want to go.
Doubter 5: All of our teachers love us without reservation!
(The entire cast looks slowly at the audience and smile in a cheesy way.)
Doubter 6: Forget Broadway! The best thing in the world would be to stay right here and never, ever, ever grow up!
SONG 3

WONT GROW UP
SCENE 3
Encourager 1: Oh, don’t believe what those doubters tell you. I think you all have what it takes to make it big on Broadway!
Dreamer 2: Do you really think so? Do you really think we can make it?

THE SYNOPSIS
One kid – or several – have dreams of being stars on Broadway. Everybody tells them it will never happen. Another group of cast members absolutely do not want to grow up. The dreamers friends encourage them to have the courage to chase their dreams. The dreamers have grave doubts about whether they are good enough; they have their tap shoes, their dance clothes, their greasepaint, etc., but they are missing one thing. They finally reach Broadway and all of the folks who are already there welcome them to the Broadway family. They realize that they may not immediately get to be a Broadway star, but they are here in this magical place, a place where everyone has a role: onstage, backstage, in the orchestra pit, in publicity, ticket sales, ushering, directing, choreographing, costumes; endless possibilities where everyone can find a place to belong. This is what Broadway is all about. When the world catches up to Broadway, the world could be as beautiful as a Broadway show.

Dreamer 2: Me too! And someday I’m going to be the star of a real Broadway show!
Dreamer 3: That’s always been my dream too. But it seems so far-fetched to think it could really happen.
Doubter 1: Well, you know what they say: ‘How do you get to Broadway?’
All Dreamers: (Dejectedly) I know…Practice!

Dreamer 6: Come on everybody….it’s time to go!
Dreamers: (Together) Broadway! Here we come!

Consider Yourself
Dreamer 1: This is the most wonderful place I have ever been!
Dreamer 2: It’s even better than I expected.
Dreamer 3: I see now that Broadway is so much more than I ever dreamed.
Dreamer 4: It seems that there is a place for everybody on Broadway.
Dreamer 5: It takes people with all kinds of passions and talents to create the real magic of a Broadway show.
Actor: That’s right! It takes people on and off stage, working together to make something wonderful!
Dreamer: Wouldn’t it be great if the whole world was like that?
Actress: It can be. Here on Broadway, we believe it can be. And it’s our job to show the world how to do it.
Dreamer 2: I feel something special just being here.
Dreamer 3: I do too!
Everyone: Me too!
Dreamer 4: (To the audience) Can you? (pause) Can you feel the hope-filled energy of everyone working together to make something truly wonderful? Can you feel the magic of Broadway?
