“Pease Porridge Hot” is a simple clapping game. This is a good song to use for reviewing the difference between beat and rhythm, or for showing melodic contour. Teach by rote and play the game.

cl: clap your own hands together
R: clap your right hand together with your partner’s right hand
L: clap your left hand together with your partner’s left hand

When the students are proficient at maintaining the clapping pattern, you can add the following actions to the rests: after “hot” blow on your hands; after “cold” hold arms and shiver; after “old” add YUCK with any appropriate action.

Read the rhythm of the song. To help reinforce the concept that the rhythm of the song is “the way the words go,” divide the class into two groups and have half the students read the rhythm using your preferred rhythm names and the other half read the words. To reinforce the difference between beat and rhythm, you could have half the class pat the beat and the other half clap the words in rhythm.

Have the students show the phrases in the song by drawing an arc (like a rainbow) in the air.

There are three phrases.
a Pease porridge hot.
a Pease porridge cold.
b Pease porridge in the pot nine days old.

Ask the students to tell you which phrases are the same and which are different. Label the phrases with letters or shapes. Show through movement how the phrases are the same or different.

Creative Ideas: Set up the instruments in F pentatonic and have the students improvise or create new melodies for the words. Use this as a B section between repetitions of the song.

Teach the song by rote.

Play the game as follows. Give each student a beanbag.

Toss it way up in the air - toss up
Tap it here - tap 2x on right leg
Tap it there - tap 2x on left leg
Pass it to a friend - pass the beanbag in front of the student on the right.

Repeat the song, getting faster each time. Use this song to review tempo terms. Use this song as a review of different tempos. Sing the song and do the actions at each tempo. Ask the students to tell you how the changing tempos makes them feel.

This song gives you the opportunity to teach students about Hanukkah. Ask the students to tell you what they know about Hanukkah. Read about Hanukkah in the student books, or read it to the students from the teacher guide. If you have a projection system, you could visit a website that tells more about Hanukkah. Teach the song by rote.

Depending on the reading abilities of your students, teach the song by rote or have the students read the solfa and the rhythms.

Form a single circle. One, two or three students hide their eyes in the middle. While you sing the song, pass a “flea” around the circle. At the end of the song, all hide their hands behind their backs and the students in the middle guess who has it.

Tip: I go to the dollar store and buy a package of the ugliest bugs I can find to be the flea.
