Invite 4 students to help you write the complete rhythm on the board. (Each does one square)
Ask the students if they can identify the song.
Read the rhythms and the melody for the song from the concept slides. If your students learned to read do re mi in Grade 2, have them sing the solfa notes for the song. If not, you can use this song to label re. Sing “Closet Key” in solfa.
Choose two students - one to hide the key and one to find it. The finder must leave the room. The hider is given 30 seconds to hide the key. It must be visible with the naked eye. When the key is hidden, the finder is allowed back in the room. The class sings the song, singing softly when the finder is far away from the key. As the finder gets closer, the singing becomes louder. It is very important that the teacher stress that at ALL dynamic levels, the tone quality should be beautiful. You could write the dynamics terms on the board and point to the appropriate one as the students sing.
Teach verse 1 of the song by rote. Teach the words to all the verses, and sing the entire song.
If you have Orff instruments, you could teach the Orff arrangement for "Old Woman All Skin and Bones"
Creative Ideas: Have the students dramatize the song.
If your students are able to, have them read the rhythms of the song "Pass the Broom."
Sing the song. As you sing, pass a rhythm stick or a broom around the circle. If you are using the video, the teacher should press pause to stop the song. The student holding the stick at that point goes out. When there are large gaps in the circle, don’t let the students move their feet to pass the broom---make them toss it to each other. This makes the game challenging, even for your upper elementary students. If you aren’t using the video to stop the song, crash cymbals for the stop signal.
