Musicplay is a menu. The teacher is not expected to teach every song or activity. Choose the songs and activities from the list that will best fit your schedule and the needs of your students.
This song can be used as a fun song or as a “stretch” during a class or rehearsal. The song is useful for teaching or reinforcing 3/4 meter. The song will probably be familiar to your students. If it isn’t, teach the song by rote and then teach the actions.
Begin the song sitting down. Each time you sing a word that begins with the letter B, change position. The first time you sing a B word, stand up. The next time you sing a B word, sit down. Continue in this way throughout the song. When you sing the song faster, it becomes more of a challenge. Have fun!
Perform rhythms at a variety of tempos.
Try levels 3-4-5 or 11-12-13.
To learn or review what the tempo terms mean, open and read the teaching slides in the activity.
Complete a tempo worksheet.
You can print the worksheet from the supporting resources.
If you don't have a printer, write the answers on a plain piece of paper.
Teach the song by rote. When the students know the song, teach the game.
Learn the sevens clap pattern for "Green Sally Up".
Play a modified version of the Sevens clap game with "Green Sally Up".
In the Sevens game, we usually do each pattern twice.
With the song, "Green Sally Up" do each pattern once.
Pattern 1-2-3-4-3-2 - you won't do pattern 1 at the end.
Do the sevens clap pattern with "Green Sally Up".
This round is easy to read and a great way to teach about or review the major scale. Have the students read the rhythms and melody, then learn to sing it well in unison. When the students can sing it well in unison, try the round in two parts.
Advanced recorder players could learn to play the melody on soprano recorders. This melody is also very playable on barred percussion instruments or on Boomwhackers.
What instrument is playing and what is the musician playing?
