Preparation Phase:
Before starting the project, it is recommended that you look through the Introduction section in the Genres of Music Unit.
1. Genre Guessing Game:
This video on Musicplay has a short musical example of a genre, then students guess the genre.
2. Brainstorm Activity:
- Ask Students for Genres: Have students name music genres they enjoy at home and list them on the board or chart paper.
- Build a Class Genre List: Combine all suggestions into one list and ask if any genres are missing.
- Repeat and Reflect: Do the activity with each class, create a master list, and discuss the diversity of musical tastes.
3. Elements of Music Search:
- Make copies of the Elements of Music Search worksheet.
- Print and cut the definitions. Place the definitions around your classroom.
- Students walk around the room, finding the definition and writing it on their worksheet.
- When complete, discuss the definitions.
4. Genre Specific Slideshows and Playlists
- Read through the slideshows for various genres.
- Listen to some songs from the school friendly playlist.

- This document holds students accountable for ensuring all required elements are included in their projects.
- Students must hand this in before handing in their project.
3. Slideshow Option:
- It may be helpful to limit student choice due to time, and have all students complete this project as a slideshow.
- An outline is provided of what to include on each slide.
- A teacher example is provided to show students a strong example.
- If possible, set up the project as an assignment in your learning management system to allow students to add links and videos.
4. Rubric and Assessment:
- Try to give timely feedback as you work through the projects in class.
- Use the rubric to assess the projects.
- Teacher Tip: To manage grading time effectively, avoid assigning large projects for all classes at once. Consider spreading them out.
