Listen to "Icicles" and show with arm motions how the notes go up and down. Sing the song, showing how the notes go. Reach up for high notes and down for low ones in line one. Show the stepwise motion of the notes in line two with alternating pointer fingers - left, right, left, right, etc. This is a good song to play for the students on step bells, a wall piano, or the body scale to show the direction of the melody and the high/low movement.

Slow the video down with the gear tool so the students can move to show how the music goes up and down as the song plays.

Move to "Winter" by Vivaldi with balloons or scarves.
My students loved keeping the beat with balloons. This may not be possible in your school if you have students with latex allergies. Another option would be to toss scarves to the beat - you could even pair up students and have them toss a scarf back and forth.

Touch the body part as you sing. Try the song faster! Another way to play this game is to leave out a word each time you sing. The first time you sing everything. The second time through, you leave out the word “toes” and just do the action. The third time you leave out the word “knees” and “toes” and just do the actions. Continue until the song is all actions and no singing. The last time, put all the parts back in, and sing it very quickly. When you do this, it helps to develop “inner hearing” - the ability to hear the song in your head.

Sing "Miss Lucy."

After the students have sung it all the way through, teach them the clapping pattern: clap own hands, clap partner’s right hand, clap own hands, clap partner’s left hand.

The clapping pattern needs a lot of practice before you should try doing it with the song. Sing without accompaniment. If you use the recording remember that you can slow it down with the "gear" too

There are 2 versions available. One includes the illustrations, and the children only illustrate the cover. The other includes just the lyrics and the children illustrate it all. Choose the option that works with your students. Sending the little books home with students helps to support early literacy and beginning readers.
