Objectives

  • I can sing and move to music
  • I can sing a response in a call-response song
  • I can describe the shakuhachi

Teaching Procedure

1 Listen to the song #56 "New Shoes"

Listen to the song.

in-person: choose 3 kinds of shoes. Choose 1, 2 or 3 guessers. At the end of the song say/sing "Who has the tennis shoe?" And the person with that kind of shoes sings/says, "I have the tennis shoe." The guesser for that shoe, guesses who has it. If you have just one guesser they have to try guess all 3 shoe holders. If you have 3 guessers, one will guess solo 1, one guesses solo 2, one guesses solo 3.

Zoom: You need to have 3 guessers, one will guess solo 1, one guesses solo 2, one guesses solo 3.
And you need 3 children to do solos. You could ask kids to find a shoe in their house to sing about.

2 Create a rondo with different kinds of shoes

Use the interactive activity, or use real shoes to create a word rhythm pattern.

For example: Slipper, slipper, boot, boot
Sandal, flip-flop, clog

Have students choose instruments (or find DIY instruments at home) and decide how to play it.

Sing the song as the A section, and sing the shoe rhythm as the B.

If each student or groups of students (in-person) creates a rhythm, you could create a rondo.

There is an Orff arrangement of the song, so if in-person and allowed, you could teach the arrangement.

3 Have students do a rhythm sort for the song "New Shoes"

This activity is available as a rhythm assessment in Supporting Resources. (optional)
