  • Listen 3 #16: “The Favorite Rag” – play a cup game

Teaching Procedure

1 Watch the kids play the singing game, "Love Somebody"

- watch the kids play the game

This is a chase game.

Adapt for Zoom or in-person: - choose two students who stand up
- sing the song (or in-person play the recording)
- give the 2 students a challenge. eg. 10 jumping jacks, touch toes and reach up 5 times, jump 20 times, 10 squats
- when they've completed the challenge they sit down.
- the first one finished is the winner.

In-person: If you can go outside, play this as a race game.
Sing the song, then race to a designated finish line.

2 Love Somebody Rhythm Fun 1

We're going to do a body percussion activity with the song, "Love Somebody"

- start by reading the words of the song
- next read the rhythms of the song

Read the words of the song.

Add a stomp on beat one.

Read the words of the song.

Add a stomp on beat one.

Add a pat on beat two.

Read the words of the song.

Add a stomp on beat one.

Add a pat on beat two.

Add a clap on beat three.

Read the words of the song.

Add a stomp on beat one.

Add a pat on beat two.

Add a clap on beat three.

Add a snap on beat four.

Divide the class into four groups - drums, metals, woods, shakes/scrapes.
If you are at home, find things at home to use for instruments.

If in-person, substitute instruments as needed.

Have the drums play on beat 1.

Another option for students at home is to play all parts on a bucket.
drum=side. metals=top. sticks=rim. snap=click sticks

Have the drums play on beat 1.

Have the metals play on beat 2.

Bucket option: drum=side. metals=top. sticks=rim. snap=click sticks.

Have the drums play on beat 1.

Have the metals play on beat 2.

Have the sticks play on beat 3.

Bucket option: drum=side. metals=top. sticks=rim. snap=click sticks.

10 Love Somebody Rhythm Fun 9

Have the drums play on beat 1.

Have the metals play on beat 2.

Have the sticks play on beat 3.

Have the shakes/scrapes play on beat 4.

Perform while saying the poem.
Then perform with just the instruments.

Another performance option might be to play all 4 parts on buckets: sides, top, rim, click sticks. drum=side. metals=top. sticks=rim. snap=click sticks.

Discuss with the class how to create a final performance. Try it.

11 Learn song #53 “Pirate Song”

- listen to the song and try out some movements as you listen
