Lesson Options: Have your students create a patchwork by coloring squares. (worksheet follows) Then say and play the word rhythms on instruments. If time permits, let the students try playing other students compositions.
It's best if you have your own copy of the story to read to the student.

Color the squares of Elmer's patchwork.
Say the colors that you've chosen.
Choose an instrument or found sound and play the colors.
Melody is a special elephant.
If you use your singing voice to ask her questions, she'll do what you ask.
eg. Melody, jump up and down.
or - Melody do a flip!
Teach the little melody by rote.
Sing the little melody as a theme, then have a student sing the colors in their patchword elephant.
Create actions to go with the poem.
