Teaching Procedures
Sing "Time for Music"

If your students can find a small toy, they could tap the toy on each beat.
When Artie Almeida has students use a toy or stuffed animal to keep the beat, she calls it a "beat buddy".
It's a fun manipulative for kids to use in keeping a beat.
Do some vocal exploration with shape cards

Copy LinkRead the story to the children along with some kind of visual - a gorilla toy or puppet, or use the letter poster. Have the children identify the letter, then sing the Letter G song and sing and move to Grumpy Gorilla.

Print or draw the letter G
Copy LinkPrint or draw the letter G. If you have a printer, download and print the letter G worksheets. If not, practice printing G on paper, and draw 2 things that start with G.
Listen to "Long and Short Sounds"
Copy LinkListen to the video, pausing after each excerpt. Ask the students if the excerpt used short sounds or long sounds.
Play long and short sounds using the "Mystery Box"
Copy LinkChoose several unpitched instruments that can play long or short sounds.
A triangle or finger cymbals resonate so they play longer sounds.
Rhythm sticks play a short sound.
Hide the instrument so the children don't see it (maybe in the mystery box).
Play the instrument. Have the children tell you if the sound is long or short.
