Teaching Procedures
Sing the echoes for “Time for Music”
Copy LinkSing Time for Music with the lyrics video.
Count the beats at the end of each verse.
Count the beats out loud.
Think up new ways that you could keep a beat, and sing your new verses.
Numeracy: Counting is numeracy! Cut out 8 hearts and have children tap on the hearts as they count. Take 2 away. Have them count the hearts now - 1-2-3-4-5-6.
In a study at Northwestern University, researchers have linked the ability to keep a beat to reading and language skills.

Say the “Hello Beat Chant”
Copy LinkDo the beat chant with a frog guiro if available. Demonstrate how to play it.
Review “One Green Jellybean”
Copy LinkReview the Jellybean Song.
After you hear the chorus for the first time, can you sing along?
Print and Cut out the Frog Cards
Copy LinkPrint and cut out the Frog Cards.
If you don't have a printer, draw and color 5 frogs.
When the sing the song, have five frogs in front of you.
When you sing, "One jumps into the pool" put one frog card in a pretend pool in front of you.
Teach "Five Green and Speckled Frogs"
Copy LinkThis is a fun counting song. To reinforce the counting, use plastic frogs or printable frog picture cards. Put 5 frogs in each ziplock bag. To help the children keep track of which “frogs” are theirs, put five frogs that are all the same color in a bag. If you are using picture cards, copy each set of picture cards onto a different color of cardstock.
How to play the game: Create a “pool” with a blue scarf. Model for the students as you sing the song how to “jump” your frogs into the “pool” on the words, “One jumped into the pool.” After modelling, give each student a set of frog manipulatives to “jump in the pool” as they listen/sing the song.
The students love to dramatize the song. Count up your students. If you have 10 students, change the words to reflect the number of students in your class and change how many jump into the pool. For example: Ten green and speckled frogs, sat on a speckled log, eating some most delicious bugs, yum, yum. Two jumped into the pool...
Sing “Five Green and Speckled Frogs”
Copy LinkSing the song.
Create actions to go with the words of the song.
It's fun to dramatize this with the students. Choose 5 students to be "frogs." When one jumps into the pool, the 1st frog jumps in the pool and swims away.
Watch the Kids in the video Jump Frogs into the Pool
Copy LinkDid you make the frog cards?
The kids in this video have plastic frogs.
When they sing, "One jumps into the pool" put one frog card in a pretend pool in front of you.
Optional: Practice Printing Letter F
Copy LinkSing "Mm Ah Went the Little Green Frog"
Copy LinkListen to the song "Mm Ah Went the Little Green Frog"
Play it again and sing along.
Notice how the 1st note of the song is low, and the second note is higher.
If you have step bells, play the notes C and F and have children till which is low and which is high.
Have the children show the low note and high note in the song with exaggerated arm motions - the mm down low, the ah with hands open, way up high.
Learn the actions for the song "Mm Ah Went the Little Green Frog"
Copy LinkWatch the kids singing and doing the actions for the song.
Sing along!
Sing quietly the second time through the song.
Sing louder the third time, but remember to still use beautiful singing voices.
Create loud/quiet patterns and say/play them
Copy LinkCreate loud/quiet patterns and say/play them.
Use the interactive below to model. (I do)
Have students help to create and decide how to play the patterns. (we do)
Have students create their own pattern with loud/quiet manipulatives from supporting resources above.
Read and play sound effects in the storybook “Jump Frog Jump!”
Copy LinkIf you have either of these storybooks they make a great extension to the lesson:
Jump Frog Jump! or Froggy Gets Dressed.
Jump Frog Jump! - read, and play the title on a frog guiro each time it comes in the story.
Dramatize! You could have the children be "Frogs" and jump each time they hear those lines in the story. (Story is read in the link)
Froggy Gets Dressed - sing "Froggy" on so-mi each time his mother calls, and sing his answer "What" on so-mi as well. Add sound effects to the sounds he makes as he's getting dressed, using any instruments you have available.
