The teacher claps the first pattern, and students clap the second.
Some of the patterns are new for Grade 1, so echo clap them.

We played with a Big Bee, Buzzy, who sang in a low voice. Then with Buzzy's little sister, Buzina, who sang in a high voice.

Jumping between low and high helped some children to find their head voice.

Adapt the game as needed.
Zoom: Make a list of names of kids in your class. Tap to the beat on the list as you sing the song. (or point to the kids). The one you land on, gets to do a buzzy bee sound, and the class echoes. (or declares a challenge that the class has to do)

In-person: Point with a flashlight to choose a child. The one you land on, gets to do a buzzy bee sound, and the class echoes. (or declares a challenge that the class has to do)

5 Color bee responders, and move them to "Flight of the Bumblebees"

In supporting resources there's a printable of bees.

Cut them out and give one to each child to color, and tape on a craft stick.

7 Model how to create a bug composition with the interactive

Use the creative process in this activity

With student input, create a pattern. Say it! Ask students if they like it.
Try some different ways. With students input, choose instruments or body percussion to play it.
Try it. Ask if they like it. Try it different ways. Refine it.

Sing the song "Bee Bee" as the A section. Use this new composition as a B section.
You can accompany "Bee Bee" on Orff instruments. Play a simple bordun or use the Orff arrangement from the song list. Decide on a final form and perform your new piece.

8 Optional: Print and have students create a bug composition

If a printer is available, have students create their own bug compositions.

Students will cut out the bugs and create a pattern

Have students try out their pattern. Do they like it? If they do, glue it in the boxes.
Have students choose instruments or body percussion to play it. Do they like it?
If not, refine it

Sing the song "Bee Bee Bumblebee" as the A section. Use student compositions as B, C, D sections.
An Orff arrangement of "Bee Bee Bumblebee" is given in the song list. (Or have students play a simple bordun.)

9 Interactive Rhythm Activities - #6-7 How many sounds on a beat?

Choose from the activities available: (#6 and 7 are suggested, but explore all that you want)
1. Sing and point to the beat.
2. Interactive beat chart - "turn off" some of the beats and have the children sing those beats "in their head." Develops inner hearing or audiation.
3. Clap the words (the rhythm of the song)
4. Beat Rhythm switch game (Beat - step beat, Rhythm - clap words)
5. Is it beat or rhythm? (assess)
6. How many sounds do you hear? (with icons)
7. How many sounds do you hear? (with notes - can use to label rhythm)
8. Create a new rhythm.

10 Option 1: Name the solfa notes in the song

If you teach solfa, with student assistance, name the solfa notes in Bee Bee.

11 Option 2: Name the pitch letter names of the notes

If you teach pitch letter names, with student assistance, name the notes in Bee Bee.

12 Introduce the "Cuckoo" from Carnival of the Animals

Invite the children to count how many times they hear the cuckoo.

Invite the children to dramatize this selection. Half the class will be the "trees."
The other half will be the "cuckoo". (safely distance).
Have cuckoos crouch down and 'hide.'

Play the video again. When you hear the "cuckoo" call in the selection, the "cuckoos" stand up and peek out around a "tree." About half way through the selection, switch roles.

13 Optional: Complete the "Cuckoo" worksheet

If printers are available, have students do the worksheet.

Students should print the words, circle if the music is fast or slow, and color the instruments.

Students should listen to "Cuckoo" starting at #1 and count the cuckoos that they hear in the music.

Then they can color the cuckoo birds and the trees.

14 Review "Lions" from Carnival of the Animals

15 Review and dramatize "Lions"

Create movement to dramatize what the lions are doing.

For example:
Introduction - pretend to sleep like a lion
Fanfare - pretend to play trumpets
Theme - prowl through the grass like a lion
Roar - show the roar with your arms. As the gets loud, spread your arms further apart.

16 Optional: Color and print the Lions coloring page

This printable will be the start of a Carnival of the Animals booklet.

There's a lion to color, and the parts of the listening map are illustrated.

This is good printing practice for your students, and will help them to learn about loud and quiet.

If you want to talk about crescendo, the roars are a great example.

17 Review #80 “Lucky Leprechaun”

Invite the students to tell you what they know about leprechauns.
(if too many want to share, invite them to share with a neighbor)

Keep the beat as you listen to the song. The teacher could be the leader, or choose leaders from the class and have all copy the leader.

Play again and sing along.
