Invite 4 students to help you write the complete rhythm on the board. (Each does one square)
Ask the students if they can identify the song.
Review “Hot Potato”
Copy LinkTeach the song by rote and play the game. Use the song to teach the dotted quarter note - eighth note rhythms.
Play the “Hot Potato” game
Copy LinkSit in a single circle. Pass a potato (or a bean bag) to the beat. The student holding the potato at the end of the song is ‘out’ and must sit inside the circle. When there are enough students inside the circle, the game can be played in the inside and outside circles. One small change in the way you play may help your students to keep a beat more accurately with the “potato”. Instead of passing the potato from student to student, have each student that gets the potato do this pattern with it: floor, knee, knee, pass. In other words, they touch the floor, touch each knee, and then pass; this means they cannot rush the beat as much when they get to the end of the song and see who’s going to go out.
Teach “I’ve a Car”
Copy LinkThis is a great action and reading song for kids. Have the students read the rhythms and note names for the song, learning the melody by reading it.
Sing the song five times. The first time, sing all the underlined words. The second time, leave out the words "bing bang" and just do the action. The third time, leave out "crash crash." The fourth time, leave out "rattle rattle." The fifth time, leave out "honk honk." If you teach solfa, read the note names in solfa. Teach the rhythm words for this song using the system you prefer.
Teacher note: We don't have a kids demo for "I've a Car". If your students would like to see themselves on MusicplayOnline please review the submission requirements here: https://help.musicplay.ca/can-i-submit-a-kids-demo

Copy LinkCreative Ideas: Invite the students to create movement with ribbons to go with the song. Set the instruments up in C (A la) pentatonic and invite the children to improvise or create melodies using CDE GA. Because it is in A (la) pentatonic, students should end their improvisation on A, not on C. Have the students improvise between verses.
