Copy LinkTeach “Hop Old Squirrel”
Copy LinkLearn the game for “Hop Old Squirrel”
Copy LinkBegin by having students hop freely to the beat as they sing the song. Ask the students how else the squirrel might move. Repeat the song, changing the action to what the students suggest (e.g., Run/crawl/fly old squirrel ...). Try substituting
the word “listen” for “eidledum.” On the word “listen”, have the students freeze until you signal them to move. You will enhance their listening skills in all subject areas using this variant of the game.
Play the game and sing “Hop Old Squirrel”
Copy LinkOptional: Teach the Orff arrangement for “Hop Old Squirrel”
Copy LinkPlaying and Creating: Invite the children to think of new ways that the squirrel could move. For example: Run old squirrel, crawl old squirrel, fly old squirrel, etc.
Try substituting the word “listen” for “eidledum.” On the word “listen” have the children freeze until you signal them to move. This helps to teach the children to stop what they are doing and pay attention when they hear the word “listen.”
Have the students choose non-pitched instruments to play the words of the song on. They could play the words “Hop old squirrel” on one instrument, and the words “eidledum, eidledum” on a contrasting instrument.
Sing “The Music Time is Over”
