Extensions:
Create new ways to keep a beat and sing the new verses. Sing unaccompanied or accompany with a ukulele.
Talk about timbre of instruments. Ask the students if the sound of the instrument is high or low - this is difficult for PreK. Optional instruments to use: triangle, sticks, finger cymbal, egg shakers, drum, frog guiro
Play the opening sound on step bells or glockenspiel, and talk about which is the low sound and which is the high sound.
Introduce the selection by introducing Brown Bear (low) and Squeaky Mouse (high). You can use puppets or stuffed animals or even use pictures. Make up a conversation between Brown Bear and Squeaky Mouse using a very low voice for Brown Bear and a high voice for Squeaky Mouse. Ask the students to tell you if Brown Bear has a low or a high voice. Some will get it and some won’t. (It will help, if you’ve done the Hello Beat chant with the students using high and low voices in previous classes.) Tell the students that Brown Bear has a low voice and Squeaky Mouse has a high voice.
Play some of the selection moving your bear toy to the low parts and your mouse toy to the high parts. Then, invite the children to move like Brown Bear and Squeaky Mouse. You will be able to observe if the students are responding accurately to low and high.
To assess, have them sit in place with their eyes closed, and move hands like Brown Bear and Squeaky Mouse to show when the music is low and when the music is higher.
Listen to the poem "There was a Little Turtle".
Listen to it again and say some of the words.
Listen again and say the words quietly.
Listen again and say the words LOUDLY.
Listen to the music and imagine a turtle moving to the music.
When the turtle is on the rocks, he is climbing and its hard for him!
When the turtle is swimming, he swims smooth and easy through the water.
In this music, listen for when the turtle is climbing on the rocks. The music is short and separated.
